It’s not up to you

‘Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done’ Ephesians 2.9 (New Living Translation)

Of course, we all know this in our minds! It is entirely by grace that we have been saved. Salvation is not a reward; it’s a gift so it doesn’t depend on our goodness at all. However, when we think of salvation, we often tend to limit it to thoughts of going to heaven when really it has far wider implications.

One of these is healing, which flowed naturally from Jesus to those in need. He never made any demands on people before agreeing to heal them. There may have been some expectation that they would change their life-style as a result of encountering him, but not before.  Another implication is us bearing God’s presence. We are temples of the Holy Spirit who lives in us, but it is not because we are perfect that he makes his home within us – far from it! We want to live lives that are pleasing to him but can only achieve this by tuning into his presence within us and letting it change us.

Salvation is not dependent on whatever you might or might not have done; it is all about God’s initiative. Take a few moments to think about some of the things God has done for you simply because he adores you. Then as you turn to the events of the day, keep your eyes open so that you spot some of his many loving touches, carefully planned to bless you and remind you just how much you are loved.
