The rescue plan

‘…Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness’ Titus 2.13-14

This verse really gives us hope for what God wants our lives to be like – free from all wickedness. It is tempting to think that this refers solely to the way we live our lives, and indeed this is a part of it. We all have things in our lives that we wish we could change – attitudes we are certainly not proud of, memories that cause us to be ashamed and yearnings we wish we did not have – and God’s desire is for us to be free from these things.

However, the other strand to this verse is freedom from the wickedness that has been done to us. Perhaps you are suffering and feel hurt because of the actions or attitudes of others? Or another possibility is that you are being robbed of abundant life by sickness, either in your body or mind. This is a wickedness, sown into the world, and not something God ever planned. Jesus’ desire is for you to be set free.

This verse reminds us that God does not simply wish these things were not a part of your life, but that he has actually done something about it; he has given Jesus for you. One modern version of the Bible (CEV) translates this verse: ‘…he gave himself to rescue us from everything that is evil.’ Repeat these words slowly so that they become personal for you. What evil is causing you to suffer? Begin to give thanks for what Jesus has done to bring about change.
