Why would Jesus touch you?

‘A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man.’ Mark 1.40-41

What are the chances of Jesus touching you and bringing healing? Perhaps behind this is a question along these lines – why should he touch me? In fact, you can probably think of many reasons why you shouldn’t be healed!

As you read this story about the healing of the leper, a good question to ask is why he was touched? Mark tells us that the reason was because Jesus was filled with compassion. So if compassion still guides the actions of Jesus, perhaps you should consider what makes it so hard for you to believe in this same compassion of Jesus to heal you?

The image of the cross shows us the extraordinary lengths Jesus went to in order for your sins to be forgiven. Paul writes in Galatians 2.20, ‘…the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.’ If this is true, why do you find it so hard to believe that out of this same compassion it is Jesus’ desire to heal you?

Paul writes in Romans 8.32, ‘He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all – how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?’ God’s compassion does not only extend to the forgiveness of sins. Paul is saying that since God has already given you Jesus, the most valuable gift he could possibly offer, then surely there is nothing at all that he will withhold.

This is the invitation before you; to catch the vision of Jesus inviting you to come to him just as you are. This is not dependant on you making any promises or fulfilling any conditions but is simply a matter of beginning to trust in his compassionate heart for you.
