“Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Luke 4.21
When Jesus finished reading this passage from Isaiah 61, he began to talk about it. The words he chose to begin his sermon were electrifying: “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Jesus was saying that this is what could be expected of him, this is what he came to do. He was speaking both to those listening in the temple in a bygone age and to us today.
Does this mean he will do whatever you ask of him right now? Not necessarily, but what it does mean is that whoever you are and wherever you might be, Jesus stands with you right now, still with this same mission he had when he proclaimed these words in the synagogue two thousand years ago.
Jesus’ proclamation did not mean that every person who was sick was healed in his three years of ministry (the disciples were still healing the sick in Jerusalem even after the time of Jesus) but it does mean that from then on Jesus’ ministry was released and it continues to this very day. His words still stand and his promises still count, because Jesus is still among us, encouraging us to believe it can be different.
Things can be different for you. Bring yourself and your needs to the one who spoke these words for you, and stand before him in expectation.
