‘You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths.’ Psalm 88.6
At first sight there doesn’t seem to be much hope in these words. The writer is obviously in a terrible place of suffering, everything appears bleak, and there seems no reason to assume that God is not behind it. However, there is also something in these words that I think must have brought great pleasure to God: in all the suffering the psalmist is going through, he cannot give up on God and refuses to turn his back on him and walk away.
If we are asked to call to mind people with great faith, we would probably think of those who have triumphed in adversity, or achieved great things for God despite fierce opposition. However, perhaps people with the greatest faith are those who hang on in desperate situations, with no idea what the future holds but still refusing to turn their back on God.
Maybe you are going through a hard time – and it may even seem to you as if God is punishing you for something. The call is still to have faith and maintain a relationship with God, talking to him and trusting that somehow, in all of this, he loves you.
We have a few spaces on our Zoom group encounter prayer session this afternoon. John will give a little teaching on a bible passage and then lead a group encounter followed by the opportunity to feedback in a breakout room. Why not take some time out to build on your relationship with God and book your place now. See link below.
