The light within you

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”  Matthew 5.16

These words of Jesus state something wonderful – we have a light within us.  At this point it is tempting to start to worry about whether our light has dimmed and is not particularly bright, but let’s think about this.

When Jesus spoke these words, he was not talking to a select gathering of very holy people!  It’s true that his disciples were present, but even they were probably towards the beginning of their time with him and had not yet received the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.  Instead, this teaching was part of the Sermon on the Mount, when we are told that Jesus went up a mountain to teach because of the crowds.  He urged all of them, everyone present, to let their light shine forth so that God would be glorified.
We often think that Christian service involves discovering what God is telling us to do, then getting on and doing it.  Well this is what Jesus is telling us to do!  He is inviting us to recognise that we have a light within us that we need to let shine at every moment we can.

You may still be wondering whether the light within you is particularly bright, but the issue is not how much light Jesus put within you but what you did with what you have?  As you look to the day ahead, see yourself carrying light wherever you go, a light that cannot be contained so it spills out into every situation in which you find yourself.
