Approaching Jesus

Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. Mark 2.4

A question we probably all consider from time to time is this, “What does Jesus think of me?”  Whether we are asking Jesus for healing or for something quite different, we do want to be sure that he is favourably disposed towards us!  We also like to think that we are using the right words or having the right attitude when we approach him.

Yet none of this features in the story!  In fact, it is hard to think of a story in which people are more unconventional in the way they put their needs to Jesus!

There are any number of reasons why the four men could have been reprimanded for their actions.  They interrupted Jesus, preventing his words of life from reaching those in need; they were quite selfish, putting their own needs before the needs of others; and in addition, there was a certain matter of destroying someone else’s property along the way!  However, they don’t appear to have been judged by Jesus for any of these, or for anything else.  Jesus saw the desperation in their action and responded to their need.

Jesus did not come to judge anyone – he came as Saviour, to reach out to us in our troubles and bring the touch of life.  So whatever is going on in your life today, come afresh to the one who accepts you as you are and offers you the life-giving touch of his presence.
