‘Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”’ John 4.10
If only we knew! This seems to be the sense behind what Jesus said to the woman he met at the well. She would probably have asked for a lot more than physical water if only she knew just who she was speaking to and what he could do for her. This is probably the heart of Jesus for all of us. If only we really knew the nature of the one to whom we pray and what he could give us, it would probably completely change the way we pray.
In one sense, of course, we do know – God is God and nothing is impossible for him. However, the aspect of this truth we so often fail to grasp is just how much God is for us and longing to pour out blessings in abundance upon us. Most of us seem to hold back from believing in the exuberant generosity of God, but the calling from Jesus is clear: put away such things and fix your eyes upon him – if only you knew!
As you come to God today, before you begin to pray for anything specific, remind yourself of just who it is you are praying to and the abundance of life he offers you.
