Recapturing the dream

‘So God created man in his own image . . . ’ Genesis 1.27

There have been many discussions about what it means to be created in the image of God, but what it certainly conveys is that there is something wonderful about us – we contain something of the presence of God within us. Of course, God’s original plans were marred as the human race turned away from him to walk in its own way, but Jesus came to change that.

Jesus came as the image of the invisible God in human form, supremely bearing and reflecting God’s image (perhaps in a way that was meant to be true of all of us). It is as we find the joy of the presence of Jesus within us that we recapture the reality of what it means to bear the image of God.

The implications of this are profound: we bear God’s presence. As we go about our daily business (even without thinking about it), every single person we speak to will come into contact with God simply because we bear his presence. Since these people meet with us, they will be meeting God within us. This truth opens up the way for us to quietly pray in as many situations as we can, “Jesus, what do you want to do here?” Panic may grip us that he wants us to preach a full-blown sermon on the bus or train, but if we tune our ear to him, his promptings are more likely to be to perform small acts of kindness and offer words of encouragement to those with whom we come into contact.

You bear Jesus’ presence and image this very day, so be bold enough to take this seriously.
