God is not angry with you

‘For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favour lasts a lifetime;’ Psalm 30.5

All too often we believe the opposite – that God is usually angry with us but occasionally we get fleeting touches of his favour and love.  Such thinking causes us to live our lives in a constant state of sensing the disapproval of God, with just the occasional ‘well done!’  In this psalm, David urges us to think differently – it’s God’s love that is constant.

This says to us that whenever we sense touches of God’s love, they are simply momentary reminders of what is there the whole time.  If this is true, then it’s worth reflecting on what brings most joy to the heart of God – us dwelling in the certainty of his love or living overshadowed by a sense of his anger?  Would not any parent rather their children rest and rely on their love rather than cower under their supposed anger?  Why is God any different?

If you want to know how you can bless God and bring joy to him, one way is to rest in the knowledge of his love for you and enjoy it.
