‘Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed.’ Genesis 2.8
The story of Adam and the beginning of his life speaks about a dependency and fellowship with God that he would lose later. It is this fellowship that Jesus came to restore to us and because of him we can re-discover and enjoy it. Saint Augustine put it much more strongly when he said, “Our hearts are restless until they rest in you”. He was saying that until we find this dependency and fellowship, we are going to be incomplete.
I wonder if there are times in your life when you wonder if you will ever become a better person? If you have ever felt like this, rejoice! It is a sure sign that you need God – his grace, strength and forgiveness. You simply could not cope without him – and you are not meant to! In fact, if you ever get to the stage of being tempted to think you could manage without God and act in your own strength, then you have lost what he longs for – your dependency and fellowship with him.
Take a few moments to repeat these words and address them to the Father who loves having a relationship with you: ‘My heart is restless until it rests in you.’
