‘Let us fix our eyes on Jesus…’ Hebrews 12.2
The people in the New Testament could see and touch Jesus, but since he no longer exists in the physical realm this is a rather strange command from the author of the letter to the Hebrews. However, it’s not our physical eyes that are being spoken about here. In Ephesians 1.18, Paul talks about ‘the eyes of our heart’ being opened; what he speaks about is an awareness beyond physical sight.
As you sit quietly, enjoy thinking about how you are a beloved child of the Father. After a while, ask the Holy Spirit to bring you into the presence of Jesus. You may have a general sense of him being with you, or perhaps a picture in your mind showing something of his presence or even an awareness of his peace with you in your room. This is the opening of your ‘spiritual’ eyes to his presence.
The Holy Spirit loves to bring us glimpses of the presence of Jesus. We probably couldn’t cope with a full revelation of Jesus enthroned at the right hand of God, but we can cope with the sense of him being here with us now. Find him and enjoy being with him.
