Seek to Serve

“…the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” Matthew 20.28

In these words, Jesus was revealing something very central to his mission.  He spoke about the motive behind so many of his actions: his aim was not for people to look to him and see his divinity, but so that he could serve.  This was primarily to serve his Father in heaven who had sent him, but also to serve those with whom he came into contact.

Our calling is to be like Jesus, and when we dwell on this we often tend to think about our moral behaviour and purity.  Of course this is part of it, but the snag is that when this becomes our main focus as we are trying to imitate Jesus, then we can become focused on what we should not be doing which can feel rather negative.  In laying out his mission of service, Jesus gives us something positive to aim towards: to imitate Jesus is to serve.

As you go through this day, look for opportunities to serve; ways in which you can show care and touch the lives of others.  You might think this is only a small thing, but it is building a spirit of service into your life.  In this way you are imitating Jesus and serving his Father.
