Knowing beyond knowing

‘… know this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.’ Ephesians 3.19

How do we get filled with the fullness of God?  It is quite a good question as presumably if we were filled it would make an incredible difference to so many aspects of our life.  It would no doubt change our whole relationship with God and dramatically affect our effectiveness as we seek to care for and minister to the people with whom we come into contact.  If we were filled with God, surely more of him would be bound to spill out of us?

The implication of what Paul is saying is that being filled with the fullness of God does not happen automatically.  It is true that we all bear his name and his presence is indeed within us, yet Paul says that there is more – and that the way to find more is to ‘know this love that surpasses knowledge’.  This love can only come, as Paul wrote a few verses earlier, by the action of the Holy Spirit within us.

If you do not have everything you want in your life with God – be encouraged that there is more!  The Holy Spirit is seeking to give us more.  It is not a matter of struggling to find ‘more’ for ourselves – it cannot come by our labour or knowledge – but it is a gift from God.  The first step then, is to ask God for more and the next step is to be aware of his desire to answer your prayer.  Look for the signs of his love that God is seeking to reveal to you.  Ask and expect!
