‘…be careful that you do not forget the LORD’ Deuteronomy 6.12
At times in our lives we will all have been astounded by the goodness of God. This may be thanks to a specific answer to prayer, or simply an awareness of his on-going kindness. At such moments we feel certain that we will never forget what he has done for us.
However, we also know that there have been many other times when we have looked back over the day and realised that we had completely forgotten all about him.
Over the past couple of days we have been thinking about ways of trying to increase our awareness of God’s presence and goodness to us. Another way of doing this, which may sound a bit mechanical but does have real value, is to take time to ponder the day just ending, or to look back over yesterday, and deliberately count off ten things for which you are grateful to God – and give reasons for your gratitude. It may be that you are grateful for specific blessings that come to mind, or for more general blessings that are equally important, such as food or warmth.
It is amazing how much we do take for granted, and if we can begin to get into the habit of thanking God we will begin to see many more things being given by his generous hand. All things come from him, and showing our gratitude is how we let this grow in our consciousness.
