What do you believe?

11august‘And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”’ Matthew 3.17

If you were to hear these beautiful words of affirmation spoken over you, they would be incredibly affirming.  If the words were actually spoken from heaven they should settle once and for all any doubts that you might have about whether or not God loves you, and hopefully would cause your sense of self value to soar.

The glorious truth is that these words are true for you.  In Ephesians 1.5, Paul assures us that we have been adopted as God’s own children.  A child of God is quite simply a child of God!  Paul doesn’t write about different categories of child – special children and other children!  We are all children of God, for whom he sent Jesus to reveal the Father’s love, and the Holy Spirit to make that love a reality for us.  The only thing that differentiates between God’s children is which ones actually believe it to be true.

There is probably little more that God can do to reveal his love to us.  He has sent Jesus so that by looking at him we might see the Father, and he has given us the Holy Spirit to live within us calling out the words ‘Abba, Father’ in order that we might learn to echo these words ourselves.  The rest is down to us.

Ultimately it comes down to a matter of choice – we can fight it, or we can choose to believe it.  If you can say, “I choose to believe this is true of me”, then you will find that even more of the wonder of God’s kingdom opens up for you.
