‘When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realised that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.’ Acts 4.13
With a little imagination and a touch of dreaming, you can probably summon up some sense of what God could achieve through you. It may be something to do with your influence on your family or perhaps even a longing to introduce family and friends to Jesus; or perhaps it might be dreams of other work you could undertake on God’s behalf, and glorious things you could achieve.
The trouble is that most of our dreams stay on the level of dreams, things that we could achieve but probably will not. This comment from Acts 4, made about the disciples, gives us a clue about how dreams can be translated into reality. It starts with us being with Jesus and spending time with him.
Your intimacy with Jesus is the clue to achieving so much: hearing his whisper in your ears, sensing your heart beating in time with his, seeing things around you becoming alive, and having a faith that doesn’t become legalistic.
There is no short cut to intimacy – it involves spending time with Jesus. It doesn’t really matter what you do in his presence as long as you do something! What’s more, there is no delay to intimacy. It can happen today, and as you begin to spend time with him you will discover that he has been there waiting for you all along.
