‘…the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.’ 1 John 4.4
This verse states an amazing truth with such clarity and force; whatever spiritual opposition you may face, the one who lives in you is greater. So what does spiritual opposition mean? What are we talking about?
Such language may conjure up pictures of battles, but the reality is that the greatest opposition facing most people is in their minds. On that battlefield, the skirmishes tend to be in the realms of temptation, the knowledge of God’s love and the reality of God’s presence. This is where our enemy loves to fight his battles because we can be so weak at retaliating.
The promise is that Jesus, who lives in us, is greater than the enemy, but this does not stop the battles taking place. We often make the wrong assumption that because there is a battle, we must have been conquered already. This is simply not true.
The reason that John shares this truth with us is so that we will have the foresight to remember that the one living within us is stronger than any other force working against us. Our calling is to recognise moments of battle and respond appropriately, by recalling this truth.
If you are going through a hard time in some area of your life, call it to mind now and consciously remind yourself that the Jesus who lives within you is sovereign and that there is nothing too difficult for him. In this way you will find that his strength flows into you, and the battle is won.
