Being single-minded

singlness“I will give them singleness of heart” Jeremiah 32.39

These words come from some verses in which God is revealing to Jeremiah something of his dream for future believers – us! God’s desire is quite simple, that we should have “singleness of heart”.

If we are honest, we all know that there are times when we act with pure motives and very much seek to see the glory of God revealed through our lives, but at other times our motives and actions are prompted by more selfish desires. This hardly reveals “singleness of heart”! However, the good news is that God equips us to do his will. In other words, he has given us everything we need to live and work with single-mindedness throughout every aspect of our lives. The reason that we turn to ourselves at times, rather than to God, maybe due to circumstances or weariness, or that we simply forget to turn to the power that God has put within us.

It is tempting to think that we need a greater experience of God, when actually what we need to do is to practise the truth – that we bear the very presence of God. The more we can call this to mind throughout the day, then the more our awareness of it will be there at the moments when we need it most.

Take a few moments to reflect on this phrase from Jeremiah 15.16: “…I bear your name, Lord God Almighty”. Come back to it throughout the day, and at your moments of greatest weakness find this truth again, and allow yourself to draw on God and not on your own strength.
