‘He said to him, “If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.”’ Luke 16.31
How strong would you say your faith is? You probably wish it was stronger – but how can you strengthen it? You may think that if only you had some real proof your faith would be stronger; if you could see something dramatic happening in front of your very eyes then you would be convinced and your faith would grow.
However, in this verse Jesus said that for many people it wouldn’t be like this. There is certainly nothing wrong in experiencing dramatic events, and indeed such an experience can draw us deeper to God, but there will never be enough for some people. Even if they see something dramatic they will always attempt to explain it away or find some other solution. Jesus seemed to be saying that the most effective way of deepening faith is to take seriously what he said in the Bible.
Take a passage from the New Testament, perhaps one of the stories about Jesus, and as you read it think about what it shows you about God. What does it say about his character and his heart? Try to make it personal – what is God saying about his love and desire for you through this passage? Take this into the day ahead and let your faith grow.
