Letting Jesus be Lord

‘I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart; before the ‘gods’ I will sing your praise.’ Psalm 138.1

There is only one God, but there are other things in our lives that can take the place of ‘gods’ by assuming positions of power over us.  This verse from Psalm 138 puts all these in perspective.  It acknowledges that although other things in life might have some influence over us, there is a way to deal with them.

Part of the issue is where we put our focus, because whenever we spend time focussing on something its influence is bound to grow.  So it follows that if our focus is on Jesus, then it is his influence that grows and then things tend to change for the better.

Take a moment to name some of the issues that have a degree of control over you, and then proclaim the lordship of Jesus over each of them in a relevant way.  It may be, for example, that sickness is exerting control over you – and may even be dominating your life.  Proclaim Jesus as the one who came to take your sickness upon himself and to bring you abundant life.  Anxiety is another example.  If you tend to struggle with this issue, then worship Jesus who said that he came to bring peace such as the world cannot give.

Where will you choose to put your focus today?
