Worship anyway!

‘How can we sing the songs of the Lord while in a foreign land?’ Psalm 137.4

This verse is so honest.  The people had been taken from their land and were finding it hard to sing their familiar songs of worship when things were going so badly.  Their change in circumstances was adversely affecting their relationship with God.

There are many times when we might be tempted to echo their sentiment. It’s one thing to worship when things are going well – when there are definite answers to prayer and the awareness of God’s presence is all around – but to worship in the midst of confusion and when blessings seem a distant memory is quite another.  However, worship in these difficult times touches God deeply.

We will never know the reason why there is sometimes suffering in our lives despite having a God who promises to care for us, and there are many things over which we have no control, but we do have control over our decision to worship God in all circumstances.  We can make the choice to ‘sing the songs of the Lord while in a foreign land’.
