“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my saviour” 2 Samuel 22.2-3
In this passage, David was reflecting on what he had learned about God. He spoke these words with absolute conviction as they expressed what he knew to be true. He certainly was not saying that his life had been straight-forward with no difficulties – just think of Saul’s treatment of him, his own moral failure and his son rebelling against him! Instead, despite all these difficulties and many more besides, he could look back and see the hand of God upon his life, even if it might have been hard to see it at the time.
When David was forced to flee from his own home because his son was leading a revolt against him, he may not have chosen to call God his deliverer, but years later, as he looked back at how things had worked out in the long term, that is exactly the word he used to describe God.
We can be very quick to judge the character and nature of God by how we perceive life to be right now. Instead, we need to learn to be like David and take a different view; to look back over time and prepare to be amazed at how faithful God has been to us.
