‘Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.’ Psalm 91.1
In this verse, the concepts of ‘dwelling’ and ‘resting’ are wonderfully linked. If you dwell in the presence of God, then you will rest in his shadow. There is something about the word ‘resting’ that is so appealing; it implies an ability to find a completely different way of living within the normal stresses and strains of life. Strain may still be present, but it shouldn’t dominate everything else. The way to find God’s rest is to dwell in him, but how can we do this?
It is worth noting another key word in today’s verse – whoever. This assurance is not something for one or two people who have learned the secret of union with God, but for everyone. It really is possible for us to dwell in him. God’s presence is your home and every time you want to come back to the reality of this, you can. It is simply a matter of calling to mind the wonderful fact that Jesus is always with you because you dwell so closely to him. Just whispering his name at any point during the day is a means of coming back to the truth that you and Jesus dwell together.
Try this and discover the rest that it brings.
