Using our gifts

‘All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.’ 1 Corinthians 12.11

Admitting that we have a gift from God can sound very boastful!  We tend to shrug it off and think that we are nothing special.  Yet it really is ok to recognise we have a gift – after all, we haven’t earned it.  It is something that God has chosen to give to us just because he wants to, and it has nothing to do with whether or not we are good enough.  If you think about it like this, it is quite humbling to admit to having a giftfrom God because it means we could not achieve what we do without it.

So once we have admitted to having a gift, we need to use it for God’s glory.  We can spend a long time quibbling about whether we have a particular gift from God or whether it is simply something that we would naturally do, but however we feel about this, we need to let what we have be a blessing to others.  The reason God has given us gifts is not for us to admire his handiwork in us, but for the benefit of others.

You may like to use this simple prayer: “Father, thank you for making me who I am, and let me be a blessing to those I will come into contact with today.”
