Jesus – our Saviour today

‘They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” He called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”’ Luke 18.37-38

The story of the healing of a blind man (named Bartimaeus in Mark’s account of this story) is so powerful, and we often read such stories looking for clues as to how we might also find healing! Of course, the story is not about us finding the correct ‘way to be healed’, but it does reveal a wonderful attitude on behalf of the blind man.

How much he knew about Jesus before this occasion we do not know, but it seems that he made a wonderful connection – having been told that the person passing by was Jesus of Nazareth, he then recognised that this same Jesus was none other than the Messiah, the Son of David. We have no idea whether he worked this out for himself or was told by others, but the fact that he made that connection seemed to be enough to get Jesus’ attention. The challenge to us is also to make a connection.

We read about Jesus in the pages of the New Testament and beautiful though those stories can be, it is all too easy for them to remain as stories in a book about a great person living in a different time. Our calling is to recognise that the person of Jesus revealed in the Bible is also our Saviour now – today.

Is there some area of your life in which you are in need? Come to the one who is not just the Jesus of the pages of the Bible, but also the Saviour of your life today. Talk to him, encounter him and be open to his touch upon your life.
