“Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” John 14.12
For any who are involved in the ministry of healing, these words always strike home with a challenge and can actually be quite discouraging. We are nowhere near doing what Jesus did, let alone moving into greater things. Yet as well as presenting us with a deep challenge, these words also provide us with a beautiful invitation.
Jesus is saying that his return to the Father is the source of the power that we are expected to witness. This has often been interpreted as Jesus saying that when he goes to his Father, the Spirit will come and we will minister in his power. However, it is more than this. Jesus is also saying that there is something about him entering into that unity with his Father once again that is so powerful. Indeed, in the preceding verse Jesus shared that the source of his power was the Father dwelling within him.
The invitation Jesus is giving us is to accompany him on the journey deeper within the Father’s heart. Yes, let’s call out for more of the Holy Spirit – but let us also allow ourselves to be drawn closer to the Father’s heart, to discover more of his love and delight in us and more of his passion for us.
